The goodly Mr Newman worked in a surrealist vein before developing his mature style. This is characterised by areas of color separated by thin vertical lines, or "zips" as Newman called them. In the first works featuring zips, the color fields are variegated, but later the colors are pure and flat. Newman himself thought that he reached his fully mature style with the Onement series (from 1948). The zips define the spatial structure of the painting, whilst simultaneously dividing and uniting the composition.
The zip remained a constant feature of Newman's work throughout his life. In some paintings of the 1950s, such as The Wild, which is eight feet tall by one and a half inches wide, the zip is all there is to the work. Newman also made a few sculptures which are essentially three-dimensional zips. [Thank you Wikipedia].
Could it be before he entered the art world, he worked in Clothing Manufacturing...is there a connection? I worked in a bun shop in my youth...Is that why I keep doodling donuts; or am I just hungry...

The Russians back in the day thought him a bit of a degenerate [so he was probably ok then]. He really believed in the power of his work. On his deathbed he was exhibited with the black square above him. After, his ashes were sent to Nemchinovka, and buried in a field near his dacha. A white cube decorated with a black square was placed on his tomb. Well it beats your usual slab of concrete I guess.
He inspired everything from books to music. Indeed, a song titled "Sabrina", from German Industrial Band Einstürzende Neubauten album's Silence is Sexy, includes lyrics about Malevich's Black Square. If you aren't familiar with Einstürzende Neubauten, lets say its hardly Lady Gaga material.

No - Mr Albers wasn't celebrating square dudes and the art of dressing blandly. Begun in 1949 ‘Homage to the Square’ is Albers most famous series, he devoted the next 26 years to producing more than a thousand works that included paintings, drawings, prints and tapestries. The series provided an in depth exploration of chromatic relationship between several concentric squares of colour by examining the effects that adjacent colours have on one another when processed by the human eye and the optical illusions created by flat planes of colour advancing or receding in space.
